US Mail

After mom move out of her condo, I had to decide where her mail would be sent.  Using a virtual mailbox (such as iPostal1 or UPS) was an option, money was a concern and so paying for a mailbox was not an option for me.  For a short time, mom was living with my brother and so I used that address as her mailing address.  But, that meant travelling to my brother's home 25 miles away to get any important mail, especially after mom was moved into Assisted Living.

In the end, I used my home address as mom's mailing address allowing me to quickly receive any important mail that was sent to her.  During the Medicaid application process, I was able to receive documentation from the state and Senior Resources Alliance and quickly respond to any of their requests.  I think this allowed us to get approved for Medicaid more quickly.

Important Documents

Mail may be the last thing on your mind when considering everything you need to do for your loved one.  But if you are expecting to receive important mail for your loved one, having immediate access to it could be critial if the mail contains time-sensitive documents.

Think about how and where your loved one's mail will be sent if they will be moving into an Assisted Living Facility or a Skilled Nursing Facility.  While packages may be sent to the facility if they allow it, I don't recommend sending regular mail there.  The facility staff is extremely busy and there is a risk that they could lose an important letter.
